Is is Advisable to Have Your Newborn Ears Pierced?

Ear piercing has become a practice of sort at some hospitals. There's no contraindication to that. However a couple of factors must be considered for safety purposes.

Have your infant's hearing checked. The popping sound of the piercing equipment may affect your child's auditory system. Also, consider that her ear lobe is still soft and not yet fully formed. You might have to do it all over again later when her ear has developed.

And though the equipment is sterile. Your baby has not had any anti tetanus shots. It might be safer to delay this procedure until the baby's fifth or sixth month when she has gone through a battery of immunization, including anti-tetanus vaccine.

Lastly, think about the type of earring you'll use. Babies tend to scratch their ears and loosely fitted pair might come off, there is thus danger of that tiny thing being swallowed by your baby. Want to play it safe? Wait until she's three (at this time, she'll know enough not to swallow stuff).

When Should Your Little Girl Ear's Be Pierced?

For me I think any age is okay. If you want it done early, the baby should have at least received her first anti-tetanus vaccine, which is usually part of DTap-IPV combination vaccine, and the size of her earlobe is big enough so that the earring will be positioned centrally.

Some parents choose to have their baby's ears pierced at birth or during the first year of life while others prefer to wait it out until the child is four or five years old.

If you want to have your kids ears pierced when they are bigger, it is recommended to best wait until the child is emotionally ready to go through the brief pain and understand the process. Parents must be aware that after ear piercing, a great amount of care is required to prevent infection. Alcohol must be dabbed on the earlobe three times a day for at least two weeks. Do not attempts to remove the earring until after two months or so. If there's irritation or some discharge, have you daughter's earlobes checked immediately by your pediatrician.

Having my Baby's ear pierced

I don't know if its advisable to have Keona's ears pierced, My wife wants to have Keona's ear pierced to have her look more feminine, cause Keona has short hair, some people would thought Keona is a boy at first glance. Although shes already 1 year and 2 months I'm still having second thoughts. Because number one is the safety factor, because Keona tend to scratch her ears especially if shes not comfortable with things hanging in her head, ears or body. Knowing this she might accidentally pull her earrings resulting to a wound or the earrings would loosen up and come of, and due to her curiosity she might swallow that little shiny thing. Maybe I'm just too paranoid.
